This happy horse dancing through the meadow of wildflowers was created by Sasha Zatuchny. The painting was done by reserving white areas, and then applying thin layers of watercolor paint. What an exciting result!

Mariana and Rebecca enjoyed drawing each other in various poses before doing this project.  They learned a little about proportions of the body and how to express a variety of actions. Good job!

Ellen Modlin finished this painting using watersoluble oil paint.  She loved the ease with which it could be blended.  This kiwi close-up looks delicious!
Great job, Ellen!

Esther and Gail Trifel began Art Lessons this past September and they have been eager students! This project combined an abstract technique to create the background and more precise layering on the subject. These colorful creatures brightened up the studio while they were in process. Very well done!

BEGINNER VALUE DRAWINGS

Dasha and Sophia recently began studying art at the Art of Excellent Studio. Even though they each have private lessons independent of each other, they produced similar work because I always have my beginners learn how to create a simple composition from observation and express a full range of values with charcoal.
This exercise is fun, and produces excellent results on the first try!
Nice work Dasha and Sophia!

A TALE OF TWO PORTRAITS

5/8/2018

Two Art Students with very different takes on their self portraits.
Daniel chose the traditional approach, using realistic transitions of values to model his features and he achieved a recognizable likeness.
Sofiya used both a forward facing and profile reference photo for her fantasy "nature" portrait. She used water soluble oil paint and applied three-dimensional butterflies as a finishing touch.
Both students applied everything they learned to create these wonderful pictures.
Keep it up!
